It is a legal requirement for all newly qualified nursery staff to hold a valid Level 3 Paediatric First Aid (PFA) certificate before they can be included in the staff-to-child ratios as set out in the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework. This also applies to all registered childminders, who must maintain up-to-date Paediatric First Aid certification at all times. The requirement ensures that those responsible for young children are fully prepared to respond confidently and appropriately in medical emergencies such as choking, CPR situations, allergic reactions, and more. Holding a recognised Paediatric First Aid qualification not only supports regulatory compliance with Ofsted and the Department for Education, but also promotes a culture of safety and reassurance for parents, staff, and children alike.
